AGENDA BCNFiesta of La Mercè During the Fiesta of La Mercè (celebrating the Virgin of Mercy), fire-breathing dragons, costumed devils, human pyramids, Sardana dance groups, orchestras, DJs and big-name bands converge on Barcelona. Events take place by day and by night. Particularly spectacular is the Carrefoc, a midnight train of dragons, eagles and devils that make their presence felt on the streets to a backdrop of fireworks. During the day, crowds pour into the streets of the Old Quarter to witness the red-and-blue costumed teams of castellers, who try to build the tallest human tower possible. The CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporànea de Barcelona) hosts street theatre, Moll de La Fusta offers circus acts, while the Plaça St Rei gives centre stage to a number of dance troupes and performing artists. Look out for the Sardana, the Catalan dance that can appear like a group of people dancing around their handbags. In the spirit of the occasion, Barcelona residents swim across the harbour and many make it down to the beach to take part in a kite display.
